Majority of Republicans would attend a same-sex wedding
A poll has shown that 56% of Republicans would attend the same-sex wedding of a friend or loved one.
Conducted by Reuters, the poll has revealed that far Republicans would attend a same-sex wedding than would not – although still less than compared to Americans over all.
It is a question being asked of many of the Republican politicians who are running for president, and those who are expected to do so.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio said he would, despite saying same-sex marriage is against his Catholic faith. He said: “If there’s somebody that I love that’s in my life, I don’t necessarily have to agree with their decisions or the decisions they’ve made to continue to love them and participate in important events.
“Ultimately, if someone that you care for and is part of your family has decided to move in one direction or another or feels that way because of who they love, you respect that because you love them.”
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush also said he would.
However, Rick Santorum, who is widely expected to run, said he would not. He said: “That would be a violation of my faith.
“I would love them and support them but I would not participate in that ceremony.”
The same poll showed that 80% of Democrats would attend a same-sex marriage ceremony – far above the overall average of 68% – and 70% of independents said the same.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said he has been to the reception party for the same-sex wedding of a family member, despite believing marriage should be between one man and one woman.
