18-year-old election candidate once tried to ‘cure’ his sexuality
Luke Holland is hoping to be Britain’s youngest ever councillor.
He’s standing as an independent in Birmingham Kings Heath and Moseley, and only just turned 18.
He says he’s a proud member of the LGBT community, but it hasn’t always been that way.
“It was really hard because for years I’d Google ‘gay cures’ and things like that because I didn’t want to be gay.
“Living in Solihull, it’d be like ‘what the hell?’, ‘It can’t happen’, ‘what are people gonna say?’ and stuff like that; and when I came out, people were so supportive.”
If elected, he plans to use his councillor’s allowance money to set up youth clubs – he says he doesn’t need the money, as he has a eco-friendly cleaning company he started when he was just 16.
He already has big plans – he says he wants to stand as an MP in the future, and told the Huffington Post – “[Being] Mayor Of Brum sounds decent.”
He also said: “An issue very close to my heart is diversity. Birmingham thrives on diversity while racism divides us. I do a lot to promote a diverse Birmingham and tackle racism when I see it.”
