Al Murray: ‘If I lose alongside Nigel Farage in South Thanet, I’ll resign too’
Pub landlord Al Murray, who is standing against Nigel Farage in South Thanet, has said he will “resign as well”, if he fails to gain the seat.
Mr Farage – who leads the UK Independence Party – has repeatedly defended the party from allegations of homophobia, and has said he will step down as UKIP leader if he fails to win in South Thanet.
Arriving to hear the results of the poll, Mr Murray said: “If I lose I’ll resign as well”.
Mr Murray – who is running for the fictional Free the UK (FUKP) party – said on announcing his candidacy: “It seems to me that the UK is ready for a bloke waving a pint around, offering common sense solutions.
“That is why I am here to announce my intention to run for election as member of parliament for the constituency of South Thanet.
“Let it be known, like many of the parliamentary hopefuls in the upcoming election, I have no idea where South Thanet is. But did that stop Margaret Thatcher from saving the Falkland Islands? No.”
PinkNews asked Mr Murray’s spokesman to clarify his stance on same-sex marriage and gay rights, but he declined to comment.
The declaration in South Thanet is now expected at 9am, three hours later than originally announced.
