Tory MP who compared same-sex marriage to polygamy re-elected
Tory MP Matthew Offord, who compared same-sex marriage to polygamy and branded it an “attack on religion”, has been re-elected.
Dr Offord, who is the MP for Hendon, failed to be unseated by former Labour MP Andrew Dismore, over whom Mr Offord previously held a tiny majority.
In 2010, Dr Offord recieved 19,635 (42.3%) votes, compared to Mr Dinsmore’s 19,529 (42.1%).
Despite another challenge from Mr Dinsmore, Dr Offord retained his seat with 24,328, above Mr Dinsmore on 20,604.
Offord previously claimed that “same-sex marriage is an attack on religion”, adding: “They want to make significant changes to the religious belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
“They want to redefine it and that has taken the religious meaning out.”
He said: “The evidence from around the world is that once marriage is redefined, with a flexible definition, pressure always grows for redefinition.
“There are several advocates of same-sex marriage who openly support changing the law to permit polygamy.”
