Gambian President threatens to ‘slit the throats’ of gay people
The President of Gambia has threatened to slit the throats of any gay people in his country.
Yahya Jammeh made the threat last week while making a tour stop in the country’s North Bank region, reports Vice News.
On addressing the issue of gay people in Gambia, Jammeh said:Ā ”If you do it [in Gambia] I will slit your throat.
He continued: “if you are a man and want to marry another man in this country and we catch you, no one will ever set eyes on you again, and no white person can do anything about it”.
Earlier this yearĀ Jammeh said gay people āwant to impose homosexuality on the globe, they are doomedā.
HeĀ hasĀ previously said that gay people are āvermināĀ and thatĀ homosexuality is one of the greatest threats facing humanity.
An attempted coup against Mr Jammehās government failed at the end of December.
Prior to that the President signed a new billĀ which calls for life imprisonment for people caught engaging in same-sex sexual activity.
Jammeh has ruled Gambia since a military coup in 1994.
In 2008, he was strongly criticised by EU officials after he vowed to introduce laws stricter than those in Iran, where gay acts between men are punishable by death.
