Supermarket ‘investigating’ after magazine’s gay kiss covered with price labels
A supermarket says it is “investigating” how a magazine cover featuring a gay kiss was covered up using a price label.
PinkNews reader Thomas Dunning noticed that copies of Hot Press magazine – which features a gay couple on the cover ahead of Ireland’s marriage referendum – were suspiciously covered up in supermarket Centra Ireland.
The price label on the cover is placed to obscure the mouths of the same-sex couple – with the reader reporting that “every copy” of the magazine had been covered in the same way.
Centra responded: “This isn’t how the magazines were priced when they were put on the shelf. We’re investigating how the incident occurred.”
The Republic of Ireland is set to vote on May 22 on a proposal to introduce civil same-sex marriage.
Bono joined a number of celebrities in endorsing equality ahead of the vote, saying: “[Marriage] is owned by the people. They can decide. It is not a religious institution.
“As far as I know, Jesus wasn’t a married man and neither are most priests talking about it. It is not a religious idea.
“In my mind, commitment is one of the most impossibly great human traits. It is a hard thing to hold on to, and anything that brings that together is a totally wonderful thing.”
Ireland’s Taoiseach Enda Kenny spoke this week about reconnecting with a gay relative over his support same-sex marriage.
