University campus priest says he was sacked over pro-LGBT Facebook post
A priest working on the campus of a university says he was sacked because he supported a pro-LGBT organisation.
Reverend Warren Hall tweeted on Friday that he had been sacked from his post at the Seton Hall University campus ministry because of a Facebook post.
He wrote: “I’ve been fired from SHU for posting a pic on FB supporting LGBT “NO H8″. I’m sorry it was met with this response. I’ll miss my work here”.
According to the New Jersey Catholic university, the Archiocese of Newark makes all decisions relating to priests on campus.
“Seton Hall University does not comment on personnel matters,” spokeswoman Laurie Pine said in a statement. “The Archbishop of Newark appoints the Director of Campus Ministry, who serves at his discretion.”
Hall will continue to serve the Archdiocese but will no longer be working on the university campus, said spokesman Jim Goodness.
Goodness declined to comment on the details of Halls’ removal.
Responding to Halls’ tweet, current and former students expressed their anger at the fact that he had been sacked.
In another tweet, Hall wrote: “Grateful for all the support. Dont be angry!! Turn this into an opportunity for open/reasonable discussion on LGBT issues on a Cath Campus.”
