Worried Eurovision isn’t gay enough? This might be the answer…
After Graham Norton warned that Eurovision will be ‘quite straight’ this year, an enterprising video maker has taken it upon himself to make sure that’s not the case.
Following last year’s victory of Austrian drag artist Conchita Wurst, UK commentator Norton predicted the next contest will be “quite straight” by comparison.
However, if anything can make Eurovision camp again ahead of today’s semi-final, a number of mash-ups with classic Disney songs should do the trick.
The UK’s entry Electro Velvet – whose song ‘Still in Love with You’ has been compared to a vintage waffle ad – takes on a new life when set against Mary Poppins, while 2010 winner Lena (who you’ve probably forgotten) becomes a lot more memorable against Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
A pedant might point out that the seven dwarves would have to off a member to take part in Eurovision, however – as you’re only allowed six people on stage during a performance.
Eurovision is not all camp, either – with The Evil Queen perfectly supplementing the ‘hard rock’ of 2006 winners Lordi.
Norton had predicted: “It’ll be interesting this year… I think it’s going to be quite a straight contest.
“Austria are taking it quite seriously, they’re delighted to have it. And there are lots and lots of ballads this year. There aren’t that many upbeat songs.”
He probably wasn’t expecting this mash-up of Bucks Fizz and Alice in Wonderland, however – which even the maddest of hatters would agree is far from straight.
The Eurovision Song Contest’s first semi-final airs this evening at 8pm on BBC Three, with commentary by Mel Giedroyc and Scott Mills. The second semi-final is held on Thursday – with Graham Norton providing commentary for Saturday’s Grand Final on BBC One.
