No Loose Women ‘ISIS cake’ apology despite calls for Coleen Nolan to be sacked
Loose Women host Coleen Nolan has not apologised despite calls for her to be sacked from the show after she compared asking for a “support gay marriage” cake to asking for a “support ISIS” one.
Nolan made the comments while hosting the ITV programme yesterday, and was joined by Janet Street-Porter and Jamelia, as they discussed the ruling made in Belfast which found that Ashers Bakery unlawfully discriminated by refusing to make a pro-same-sex marriage cake.
She compared a “support gay marriage” cake to one supporting ISIS, the militant group which publicly executes gay people.
“What about if someone walked in and said I want a cake and I want the whole Islamic State [ISIS] on it, and how I support them killing our people,” she said.
Saying that “opinions were very divided” on the issues surrounding Ashers Bakery, Ruth Langsford clarified a comment made by Janet Street-Porter who incorrectly said same-sex marriage was legal in Northern Ireland.
Same-sex marriage is currently legal in England, Scotland and Wales, but is not legal in Northern Ireland.
No apology was issued for Nolan’s widely condemned comments, however, which have left viewers calling for her to be sacked by ITV.
Langsford said they were “very happy to clarify that” they meant same-sex civil partnerships, rather than marriage.
Jamelia also commented on a controversy yesterday when a group of women were turned away from the red carpet screening of ‘Carol’ for not wearing high heels.
She asked: “Did it say it on the dress code?”, going on to ask “If it’s a black tie event and a man turns up in a tracksuit, is that not the same thing?”
Janet Street-Porter said turning away women for not wearing high heels was “ludicrous”. And Langsford asked “can you be sexy in flat [shoes]?”, saying the audience, who walked up and down the studio in flat shoes had “proved it”.
Later in the programme, viewers wrote in the acknowledge that not all people can wear high heels, and that it was an equality issue.
Back in 2007, Nolan caused controversy when she said “there is only so much I want to accept”, and that gay couples should not be allowed to adopt.
ITV has declined to comment on the issue.
