BBC presenter receives hate letter calling sportswomen ‘dykes’
BBC 5 Live presenter Emma Barnett shared on Twitter a shocking letter she received about women’s sport.
Ms Barnett had spoken out about the lack of visibility of women’s sport in the media.
In a column for the Telegraph she said: “[When] you stop and consider the state of sport and the gaping chasm between the national regard for men’s games versus women’s … the absurdity of it is genuinely breathtaking.
“There is no logical reason why women’s sport fails to receive the kind of attention and big money that even the worst men’s sports teams can command.
“Women’s sport is stuck in a horribly vicious circle. The media don’t give it enough attention, as they don’t believe there is the interest.
“Consequently businesses don’t want to invest in sports they know have smaller audiences.”
Yesterday Ms Barnett posted a photo on Twitter of a handwritten letter she had received describing sportswomen as “dykes”.
The letter read: “No one wants to watch women’s sport love, it’s a joke, pony tails swaying, tits bouncing, come on on get serious.
“Put em back in the kitchen where they belong and leave sport to the warriors of the species not the dykes.”
