JK Rowling has celebrated that Dumbledore could marry Gandalf in Ireland
The author behind Harry Potter has once again spoken out in support of gay rights, after Ireland voted in favour of same-sex marriage.
Rowling, who has a long history of supporting equal rights, posted the tweets throughout last weekend’s vote, sharing her “awe” at the nation’s support of equal marriage and stating: “Ireland set an example for the world.”
On Friday, citizens in Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favour of a proposal to introduce civil same-sex marriage in the country.
As it became clear that the “yes” side had succeeded on Saturday, Rowling tweeted her joy at watching Ireland “make history”.
She also took the chance to lend to support to a young fan, who opened up about being bullied for being gay. Rowling responded with a quote from legendary equal rights campaigner Martin Luther King, Jr.
The author then went on to delight fans by endorsing a relationship between two of the nation’s favourite wizards – her own creation, gay Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, and Gandalf, played by legendary out actor Ian McKellan, suggesting the two could even marry in Ireland now that it was legal for them to do so.
Rowling has previously described the Harry Potter series as “a prolonged argument for tolerance”.
A study last year showed that children who read the Harry Potter books are more gay-friendly.
