Morrissey congratulates Ireland for gay marriage decision
Singer Morrissey has congratulated the people of Ireland for “teaching the politicians” on same-sex marriage.
In an open letter published to fan site True to You, Morrissey hailed Saturday’s decision by the people of the Republic of Ireland to legalise same-sex marriage through a referendum.
The Smith singer wrote: “The people, once again, teach the church. The people, once again, teach the politicians.”
Continuing, however, he slammed the country for its use of factory farming and fur farms.
“Now, Ireland, please abolish fur farms and factory-farming and transportation of live animals, and welcome yourself completely into the 21st century,” he wrote.
The Smiths singer, who in 2013 revealed that his first serious relationship was with a man, last year said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he had received several bouts of treatment for cancer.
After his autobiography was released, Morrissey denied rumours about his sexuality, saying he is not gay, but simply “attracted to humans.”
