Teacher quits after reading homoerotic Allen Ginsberg poem in class
Teacher David Olio from Connecticut has resigned after reading an explicit poem detailing a gay encounter to his class.
The award-winning English teacher read the Allen Ginsberg poem “Please Master” to an advanced high school English class. The poem is available to read below.
Ginsberg was portrayed by the actor Daniel Radcliffe in the critically acclaimed film Kill Your Darlings who joked: “gay sex, especially for the first time, is really f*cking painful.”
The poem had been suggested by a student, after Mr Olio asked the class if there were any poems they wanted to discuss.
After parents complained, he offered to resign, effective as of September, and is on paid leave until the end of the year.
One parent told CNN: “I don’t understand how that actually got into a high school class.
“My son is not in that class. If he was, I think I would be mortified. It was extremely inappropriate.”
But University of Illinois English professor Cary Nelson said: “”If you can’t handle Ginsberg how are you going to teach Walt Whitman?
“Either education is a place where you can talk about bigger issues and challenge students or it isn’t, and certainly students on their way to college — in an advanced college prep class — need to know that sometimes, sure, things can be uncomfortable. That’s what education is about.
“I think maybe it is not just because the graphic descriptions in the poem — and they are graphic — but because if you really listen to the poem you’ll see yourself in half the lines.
“Some people don’t want to hear themselves in a gay poem. They want to think homosexuality and heterosexuality are worlds apart.”
