Tony Abbott’s sister among speakers at same-sex marriage rally in Sydney
Thousands gathered in Sydney, Australia to protest in favour of same-sex marriage.
After opposition Labor leader Bill Shorten introduced a same-sex marriage bill in parliament, a rally was held today in the famously gay-friendly city of Sydney.
One of the keynote speakers was Christine Forster, same-sex marriage advocate and sister of Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Mr Abbott is opposed to same-sex marriage despite his sister being engaged to a woman.
Ms Forster said: “It doesn’t change the institution of marriage at all, the institution of marriage still remains being about two people committing to each other, hopefully for life, and that being legally recognised by our government. That’s all that the change is.
“The result in Ireland was undoubtedly a watershed. It was a very decisive result, it was a wonderful result really.
“That’s sent the signal to anyone who might have been holding out against this potential reform that the tide has turned.”
Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek also spoke. She said: “This is the last piece of unfinished business. This is a matter that transcends politics.”
Ms Forster said earlier this week that she believes same-sex marriage will become legal in Australia this year, despite her brother’s opposition to it.
She said: “I think it’s entirely appropriate that it would come under the prime ministership of Tony Abbott.
“At the end of the day I’m sure he will understand that this is good and fair for everybody and it will be great for Australia.”
