Tim Cook donates $6.56 million to charity
Famously generous CEO Tim Cook has donated a huge sum to an undisclosed charity.
The out gay Apple boss has donated $6.56 million (£4.3 million), after saying back in March he planned to donate most of his fortune. Apple confirmed his donation had been made, but declined to comment further, saying it was a private matter.
In an interview with Fortune, Mr Cook said he had already been donating money regularly, but wanted to start making more organised and specific donations.
He said: “You want to be the pebble in the pond that creates the ripple for change.”
Mr Cook spoke publicly about his sexuality in October last year, making him the only openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
In December last year, he donated a “substantial” amount to towards promoting gay rights in southern US states. The funds will go towards a three-year campaign in Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi, which was launched by the Human Rights Campaign.
An anti-discrimination bill in Alabama, his home state, was named after him.
He offered to donate part of his liver to late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who died of cancer in 2011.
He also can’t dance very well.
