Laverne Cox: Everybody is trans
Orange is the New Black Star Laverne Cox has claimed that “everybody is trans”.
The actress, who was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the Netflix series, explained that she believes gender is a spectrum.
She told the Telegraph: “Everybody’s trans… none of us falls neatly into the gender binary model.
“Most of us have a little bit of masculinity, a little bit of femininity.”
She also spoke about the “preoccupation” with reassignment surgery in the media after notoriously shutting down an interview question from Katie Couric.
She said: “I don’t ever talk about the physical, the details of the medical transition.
“The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people… Our bodies matter, but I’m more than my body.
“I’m so much more. I’m my heart, my soul, my spirit, my mind, my critical thinking, my talent and my intelligence.”
Cox has been a close confidant of Caitlyn Jenner, and said of her transition: “She is always talking about her kids and loves her kids so much – it’s my daughter this, and my son this, the kids are her whole life.
“The kids keep coming up; you feel the love.”
She said previously of Jenner’s public coming out: “I think a lot of people tuned in expecting to see a spectacle, and they tuned in and saw a profoundly nuanced, complicated, beautiful human being.
“I had spoken to [Caitlyn] several months back, and the same person I had spoken to on the phone, who really just loves their children so much and wants their family to be happy, was the person I saw on television.”
