Christian couple who threatened to divorce over gay marriage ‘banned from friend’s wedding’
A woman has banned a couple from her wedding – after they threatened to divorce over same-sex marriage.
Canberra Christian advocate Nick Jensen said that if the Australian government introduced same-sex marriage, he and his wife would be forced to divorce.
He wrote: “It raises a red flag when a government decides it is not content only having sovereignty over land, taxes and the military — but ‘words’ themselves.
“This is why we are willing to divorce. By changing the definition of marriage, ‘marriage’ will, in years to come, have an altogether different sense and purpose.”
Writing for news.com.au, Anne Haggar said she had attended the Jensen’s wedding ten years ago, as they had been at school together.
She said: “Nick and my fiance are still friends, despite world views that have ended up a long way apart over the intervening decade. They were still close enough that we’d sent Nick and Sarah an invitation to our engagement party.”
After Mr Jensen’s article appeared, he contacted Ms Haggar’s fiancé to ask if he was still invited.
She says, after some deliberation, she decided to make a public statement that Mr and Mrs Jensen would not be welcome.
“I don’t want you anywhere near my wedding. You and your views are not welcome, because you’re right — the institution we’re marrying into isn’t the same one you think you’re in.
“And I’m pretty sure the consequences of your actions this week are going to mean more to you than to anyone else.
“I’m sure everyone already married or currently engaged knows exactly that feeling, and how joyous declaring and celebrating that with your family and friends is. I’m entirely certain Nick and Sarah remember this feeling, too — and it’s a happiness Nick has decided some people should explicitly be denied.
“That offends me, and pretty much everyone I know.”
