Stephen Fry and Elliott Spencer forced to abandon honeymoon over homophobia
Broadcaster Stephen Fry and his husband Elliott Spencer say they were forced to abandon a honeymoon destination due to “homophobia”.
The couple, who married in January – two weeks after they first revealed their engagement – took to Honduras, as well as a number of other destinations.
The couple said they were forced to leave the Central American country early over homophobia, but declined to specify what had happened
Mr Spencer said: “‘We had a problem when we visited Honduras on holiday.
‘It was homophobia. I don’t want to go into detail, but we had to leave.”
Honduras does not criminalise homosexuality, but same-sex marriage and adoption are both constitutionally banned.
Mr Spencer, speaking to the Daily Mail at a Terrence Higgins Trust fundraising dinner, said: “Stephen takes me on his travels and he educates me.
“Many of the countries Stephen’s been to before, but he likes to see them through new eyes with me. It has been an amazing bonding experience.”
The pair opted for a low-key civil ceremony, signing the marriage register together in Dereham, Norwich.
The pair’s ceremony was ‘witnessed’ by a small model of playwright Oscar Wilde.
