Out gay rapper Mykki Blanco reveals he is HIV positive
Outspoken gay rapper Mykki Blanco has revealed he is HIV-positive, saying it is “time to actually be as punk as i say I am.”
The rapper, based in New York City, wrote on Facebook “fuck stigma”, saying he is healthy and has toured the world multiple times.
He wrote: “Ive [sic] been HIV Positive since 2011, my entire career. fuck stigma and hiding in the dark, this is my real life. I’m healthy I’ve toured the world 3 times but ive [sic] been living in the dark, its time to actually be as punk as i say I am.”
As his announcement coincided with Brooklyn and Los Angeles Prides, he wrote: “No more living a lie. HAPPY PRIDE.”
He went on: “The music industry ain’t gonna like i admitted this so if a curator could help me move more into the art world that would be awesome
“Thank you, hiding, being afraid of stigma is exhausting, we are souls not image’s thank you brother
“Thank you its just today for everyone else knowing but its been 5 years for me, meds, garlic, limes,yogurt lol world travel. I just cant be an image living in fear having people call me brave and it being a lie. Thank you for your support.”
The artist earlier this year wrote on Facebook to say that he would be taking time out from his music career to pursue investigative journalism.
Blanco has not been afraid in the past to speak his mind. On the release of her ‘Work B*tch’ single, Blanco accused Britney Spears of exploiting her gay fans, saying: “I’m not a b**ch, I’m just not an idiot […]This is not ‘gay pride’ it’s ‘gay marketing’ designed to keep u f*gs on ecstasy blasting garbage music till 6am.”
