Laverne Cox helped a woman accept her trans daughter
Orange Is The New Black actress Laverne Cox said her character helped a fan reconnect with her mother.
The actress and rights activist plays trans prisoner Sophia Burset in the hit Netflix show.
According to the Mirror, she revealed that the character helped a fan reconnect with her parent.
She said: “I was shopping in May last year in New York, and this woman comes up to me in the shoe store, and she’s like ‘Hi, I don’t want to disturb you but I told myself if I ever saw you I would have to talk to you’,”
“And she said, my mother told me to watch Orange Is The New Black… and I’m trans, and me and my mother didn’t get along, but your character on this show got my mother to talk to me again, and now we’re talking.
“And now she accepts me as her daughter’, and I was just like ‘what?'”
The Orange is the New Black actress and trans activist has had an extremely high profile over the past year – even featuring on the cover of TIME Magazine.
Ms Cox was last year was the first trans person to be nominated for an Emmy award, and will soon receive her own waxwork in Madame Tussauds.
A mother last week wrote about when her young trans daughter met Ms Cox and was told “Transgender is beautiful“.
