Miley Cyrus: I felt like I had to be ‘macho’ when I was dating a girl
Miley Cyrus has spoken about gender fluidity, saying she felt she had to be different when she was with a woman compared to when she was with a man.
The star revealed she had dated men and women last month, when she said: “There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends.
“I’m not hiding my sexuality. For me, I don’t want to label myself as anything.
“We love putting people in categories, but what I like sexually isn’t going to label me as a person.”
In an interview with TIME, on dating a man, compared to a woman, the ‘Wrecking Ball’ star said: “That made me feel like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not. And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh sh-t, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either.”
She went on to say, however: “I don’t associate men and protection necessarily. I think that’s what’s given me the openness of sexuality. Not that my dad wasn’t an awesome protector, but I trust my mom to save me. She’s the prince. I never had that fairy tale.”
She talked about crying on Valentines Day 2014, saying: “All the women in the restaurant were with these older, fat men that had just let themselves go. They were just being drunk bastards. And then the women were sitting there, trying so hard just to look good. And they’re ignoring them the whole time. And I thought, ‘I’m not living like this. If I end up in a straight relationship, that’s fine—but I’m not going to be with f-cking slob guys who are watching porn, making all their girls feel ugly.”
Cyrus launched the Happie Hippie Foundation last year, and last night was brought to tears at the amfAR Inspiration Gala, where she was recognised for her work in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
