US lawmaker: Schools should face criminal charges for teaching homosexuality is acceptable
A Republican lawmaker wants to levy criminal charges against schools that teach homosexuality is acceptable, if any students ever get sexually transmitted infections.
The anti-gay politician, who sits in the Michigan House of Representatives, made the comments in fundamentalist Christian film Light Wins: How To Overcome The Criminalization Of Christianity.
In the clip, which was picked up by Right Wing Watch, he says: “If some young person hears at school that it’s okay to be gay and then comes down with a fatal disease as a result, school officials should be held legally liable, individually and in their official capacities, financially and maybe even criminally.”
He added: “If the school environment is teaching children that homosexual behaviour is normal and healthy, and children, in reliance on what they’re taught from authority figures, decide to experiment or engage in such behaviour and suffer negative health consequences, somebody ought to be held accountable.”
Given STIs occur in nearly every environment across the world, the move would effectively criminalise any teaching that homosexuality is acceptable.
The move is unsurprising from Glenn – who recently issued an ‘agenda alert’ when his local newspaper hired an openly gay editor.
He took to Facebook to complain after the Midland Daily News promoted Tony Lascari to editor.
The state lawmaker warned: “Agenda Alert — Midland Daily News’ new news editor: political science major who ‘lives in Midland with (his) husband’.”
Glenn rejected the suggestion that his ‘alert’ was homophobic, claiming: “I posted the paper’s own report – without comment or criticism – except to alert readers to the reasonably observed possibility that this new position might be used to promote a political agenda or bias that’s at odds with our community’s values.”
A number of senior Republicans, including Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, appear in the same film – despite the extreme anti-gay views present.
