Watch: Hillary Clinton’s powerful call for equal marriage ahead of Supreme Court ruling
Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has released a video calling for all same-sex couples to have the right to marry.
The former Secretary of State released the clip ahead of an anticipated verdict from the Supreme Court on the issue, which is expected by the end of the month, and could bring same-sex marriage to all 50 states.
The clip features the weddings of different diverse couples across the US, as Clinton says: “The story of America is one of hard-fought, hard-won progress, and it continues today.
“New chapters are being written by men and women who believe that all of us – not just some, but all – should have the chance to live up to our God-given potential.
“This progress was not easily won, people fought and organised and campaigned in public squares and private spaces, to change not only laws but hearts and minds.
“All love is equal. It’s time for marriage equality.”
Quoting a landmark speech on LGBT rights that she made at the United Nations in Geneva in 2011, she adds: “Being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”
The former Secretary of State, who announced her run for President last month, first announced her support for equal marriage back in 2013 – and has consistently shown her support for LGBT issues.
She has already been endorsed last month by pro-LGBT group Equality California – more than a year before the polls open in November 2016.
Last year, she claimed in a memoir that she was “ridiculed” by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni when she confronted him about Uganda’s anti-gay legislation.
She wrote: “When I raised these issues with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, he ridiculed my concerns. ‘Oh Hillary, here you go again’ he would say.”
