Ex-Brighton player banned from tournament after ‘sticking finger up opponent’s bum’
A former Premier League footballer has been banned from an international football tournament, after a bizarre incident in which he stuck his finger up another player’s bum.
The incident occurred in a match between Chile and Uruguay for South America’s ‘Copa America’ tournament.
Chilean defender Gonzalo Jara was attempting to provoke Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani – and was caught on camera inserting a finger into the player’s rear end.
The former Premier League player, who has had spells with West Bromwich Albion, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Nottingham Forest, was lightly slapped in the face by Cavani following the poke.
He dived to the ground following the slap – and Cavani, who had already been given a yellow card for confronting a linesman, was sent off.
Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez was furious about the incident, saying: “You can see what happened and what the challenge was. I refer you to the television and photos of it, it is all there.
“I can see that the referee has not seen it, but the linesman had to be able to see it from his position.”
However, NBC reports that Jara has since been banned from the tournament over the incident.
Last year, a Bristol Rovers player was given a yellow card for kissing a player on the opposing team.
