Watch: Derek Jacobi proposes to Ian McKellen after SCOTUS ruling?!
Veteran actor Derek Jacobi appeared to pop the question to his ‘Vicious’ co-star Sir Ian McKellen on the announcement of the SCOTUS ruing on same-sex marriage.
Yesterday the Supreme Court issued an opinion that all couples in the US, straight or gay, have a constitutional right to marry.
The pair appeared in a video uploaded to Facebook by BuzzFeed, backed by Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’, throwing confetti onto a rainbow flag.
In it, Sir Ian says: “Well done Supreme Court, about time – glad you’ve joined the rest of us. Terrific! Well done! Get married everybody!”
At which point Derek Jacobi asks: “Will you marry me?”
Sir Ian responds quickly: “I will, and now I can!”
Last month, Sir Ian spoke about having a crush on his co-star and long time friend when they were at university in Cambridge together.
They play an older gay couple in the ITV sitcom Vicious.
He said: “Yes, I did fancy Derek, but I didn’t act on it, God, no. It was illegal, remember.
“What there was was a bit sleazy, I suspect. One of the reasons I became an actor was that you could meet gay people.”
Sir Derek Jacobi spoke about coming out to his mother, who declared his sexuality “a phase”.
Sir Ian will appear in the upcoming film Mr Holmes, playing detective Sherlock Holmes as an elderly man.
