Watch the moment Turkish police fire a water cannon at an LGBT activist
It has never been illegal to be gay in the modern state of Turkey, its predecessor, the Ottoman Empire decriminalised homosexuality in 1858. Today however, LGBT rights activists marching for Pride were greeted by police with water cannon, rubber bullets and tear gas.
Here a lone activist holding nothing other than a rainbow flag advances towards a police van.
The van starts its water cannon and points it at the man.
Undeterred, the man remains firm as the police fire water more directly onto him.
It hits the lone gay rights activist.
The water cannon’s pressure then hits the man to the ground.
Immediately after, police emerge from the van and begin to harass other activists.
