Listen: Keane singer releases track ‘Love Wins’ celebrating same-sex marriage
The lead singer of Keane has released a song celebrating victory for same-sex marriage in the United States.
The US Supreme Court last month ruled by 5-4 that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right, effectively bringing marriage equality to all 50 states.
Following the ruling, the slogan ‘Love Wins’ has been tweeted millions of times on Twitter – even exceeding the volume of ‘Royal Baby’ tweets following the birth of Princess Charlotte.
Tom Chaplin, who is the lead vocalist and guitarist in the alternative band Keane, this week released a free demo on Soundcloud of a song titled ‘Love Wins’.
It celebrates the verdict, whilst also appearing to dig at opponents of equality.
It includes the lyrics:
There are ways that people think that make me feel so sad,
Watching human nature sinking deeper in the sand.
But I’ve seen the way to reconcile the shame we’ve got to live with.
Love will always end up on the winning side.
Love wins, love wins, it draws us in, refuge in our darkest times
Pointing us where to go through these black and lonely nights.
The song idea came about when Chaplin asked for submissions, writing: “I’ve had an idea. Please submit song titles. I will choose my favourite and turn it into an actual song. Then I’ll post it here.”
Twitter user Facundo Oldblues suggested Love Wins, and Chaplin responded: “You know, Love Wins is good. Topical. I’ll go for that.”
Chaplin has expressed his deep frustration with homophobes on Twitter following the ruling, referred to a shop owner who posted a ‘No Gays Allowed’ sign as a “f**king moron”, and telling people opposing gay rights to “free your mind from redundant religious waffle”.
