Christian group scared homophobic kids will be ‘treated like terrorists’
A Christian group is scaremongering, after the Education Secretary said that homophobia in schools could be a sign of extremism.
Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan warned about extremism in schools earlier this week, saying: “Today the Department of Education is issuing guidance to schools to give them examples and support in how they might look for young people who are at risk of radicalisation.”
Asked to give an example of behaviour that could be concerning, she said: “For example, as we’ve seen, sadly, ISIL are extremely intolerant of homosexuality. I think if there were language… I’m not going to get into examples.”
When asked if a child describing homosexuality as “evil” would be a warning sign of extremism, she said: “It could trigger a thought, it would depend very much on the context in which that is being discussed.”
However, anti-gay charity Christian Concern seems to have taken her comments rather literally, and appears to be worried that Christian children opposed to gay rights will be carted off to Guantanamo Bay.
Andrea Minichiello Williams of Christian Concern claimed: “Many families believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Are these families now to be officially treated with suspicion and even linked with extremism? Are teachers going to be required to spy on them and even reported to the police?
“Christians believe that homosexual practice is wrong and that marriage between a man and a woman is the pattern given by God and the only proper place for sexual expression.
“Is Nicky Morgan now saying that that is an ‘extremist’ view that needs to be monitored or punished?”
She continued: “We are on the verge of a sinister new era of ‘thought-policing’ in our schools.
“If Nicky Morgan gets her way, Christians and others with mainstream views on marriage will fall under suspicion and be punished.
“Nicky Morgan’s deliberate choice of homosexuality as an example in this morning’s interview is further evidence that a right desire to fight Islamic-inspired terrorism is having the effect of creating a Trojan Horse to impose a new sexual ideology.”
