Girl Scouts raise $330k after returning $100k donation over anti-trans stipulation
The Girl Scout group of Western Washington recently returned $100,000 because the donor specified that it “can’t be used to support transgender girls”. Since then, the organisation have raised over $330,000 in donations.
In May, the girl scouts changed their longstanding policy of allowing transgender girls to join their group, a decision that hasn’t come without comments.
This decision proved to quite literally cost them. Recently being sent a donation of $100,000 (£64,000), which would allow them to bring another 500 girls to join the camp, which they refused. Despite their initial excitement, the donation came with to which they could not abide by:
“Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t, please return the money.”
Megan Ferland, The Western Washington group’s CEO, told the Seattle Metropolitan that the organisations relationship with the donor, who she kept anonymous, is “complex”.
In her response to the donation, Ferland said: “Girl Scouts is for every girl…and every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.”
The group then launched an Indigogo campaign in order to try to raise the money that they returned. Little did they know, the campaign that they launched last week has raised nearly $330,000 ($214,000) in just over 48 hours.
