Record broken by crowdfunding campaign for anti-gay bakery
A campaign in support of an anti-gay bakery in the US has broken a crowdfunding website’s record for the largest amount raised.
The owners of Oregon bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa were found guilty of discrimination this year, after refusing to make a cake for lesbian wedding in 2013 – despite making divorce celebration cakes and cakes for ‘gay cure’ groups without issue.
They were earlier this month ordered to pay $135,000 in damages.
The adamantly anti-gay American Family Association (AFA) rallied its supporters to donate to Sweet Cakes to cover the fine, and has since raised over $352,500.
After a campaign was banned on GoFundMe, a second one was started on Continue to Give, which describes itself as “a faith based giving platform”.
The amount raised in support of the bakery is the most the site has seen in its three year existence.
