The first trailer for lesbian drama Freeheld starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page has been released.

Earlier this year, Juno actress Ellen Page was announced to star and produce the drama, starring opposite Julianne Moore.

Page opened up about playing her first openly gay character since coming out herself.

The film is based on the true story of New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester ā€“ and Hesterā€™s battle while terminally ill to make sure her partner Stacie Andree receives survivor pension benefits, as their relationship wasnā€™t recognised.

The film is directed by Peter Sollett, and the screenplay is written by Ron Nyswaner, who wrote the Oscar-nominated ‘Philadelphia’.

PageĀ revealed in February last year that she was gay, in an emotional speech to GLAAD where she said she was ā€˜tired of lying by omissionā€™ about her sexuality.

Oscar winning actress Moore said in May thatĀ even if same-sex marriage were to becomeĀ law, as it did when the US Supreme Court ruled, ā€œthe fight goes onā€.
