Kevin Hart addresses ‘joke’ about not wanting gay son
Comedian Kevin Hart has addressed a controversial ‘joke’ about not wanting a gay son.
The comedian made the ‘joke’ during his 2010 Seriously tour – when he joked: “One of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay. Thatās a fear.
“Keep in mind, Iām not homophobic.ā.ā.ā.āBe happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”
He spoke to Rolling Stone magazine about the backlash to the ‘joke’.
He said: “Itās about my fear. Iām thinking about what I did as a dad, did I do something wrong, and if I did, what was it? Not that Iām not gonna love my son or think about him any differently.
“The funny thing within that joke is itās me getting mad at my son because of my own insecurities ā I panicked. It has nothing to do with him, itās about me.
“Thatās the difference between bringing a joke across thatās well thought-out and saying something just to ruffle feathers.
“I wouldnāt tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times werenāt as sensitive as they are now. I think we love to make big deals out of things that aren’t necessarily big deals, because we can. These things become public spectacles. So why set yourself up for failure?ā
He said: āI feel I canāt [play a gay character] because I donāt think Iām really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part.
āWhat I think people are going to think while Iām trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way Iām supposed to.ā
