Bomb scare diverts Brighton Pride Parade
Explosives officers were forced to divert Brighton’s Pride Parade, causing a delay to today’s celebrations.
A police spokesperson confirmed the existence of a ‘suspicious package’ on the city’s seafront, just a few yards away from where the parade was set to leave.
The parade instead proceeded from Lansdowne Place and along Western Road, before following its original route from the clock tower, reports the Brighton Argus.
Sussex Police confirmed expert explosive officers have removed the package on Twitter.
The parade was originally meant to set off at 11am, but was delayed by police until 12.30pm, eventually taking the alternative route of Lansdowne Place.
Chief Superintendent Nev Kamp said: “We are working with Pride organiSers to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and ensure the safety of those attending Pride celebration as well as those going about their daily business in the city.”
This year’s Brighton Pride celebrations are set to be the biggest yet, with over 160,000 people attending to celebrate the festival’s 25th birthday.
