John Waters wants to be able to make fun of Caitlyn Jenner
John Waters has asked why nobody is allowed to “make fun” of Caitlyn Jenner in a new interview.
The iconic director of queer cinema disregards any notions of political correctness, using both ‘he’ and ‘she’ to refer to Caitlyn, in communicating his boredom with the ubiquity of Jenner in the press:
“The Bruce Jenner/Caitlyn thing is kind of old hat to me. I had a transgender woman in Pink Flamingos. She had breasts and a penis. She got the operation that week. That was radical to me then.”
He further states that Caitlyn should not be immune from jokes: “Caitlyn’s a Republican, she’s on a reality show, and she’s a Kardashian. We can’t make fun of him or her?”
Waters also had the following thoughts on trans men: “It seems newer to me.
“They look like guys I like, so it’s even more confusing. They ask me to sign their vasectomy scars a lot, which I do.”
He is very aware of his status as a controversial figure in the LGBT community. He told PinkNews last year that he is proud of his reputation: “I stir up all the controversies within the gay community.
“I like all this trouble in the gay community, their fighting with each other and everything. I find it delightful and great material for comedy”
He also told us that it is important that comedy is used as a medium to address serious issues, and “the best thing to do to your enemy is to make fun of them”. He says “comic terrorism” is the best way to handle situations like the anti-gay law in Russia.
