Joan Rivers is still telling gay jokes from beyond the grave
You might have thought Joan Rivers had cracked her last gay joke when she died last year – but the comedian’s unique sense of humour lives on.
The gay icon and ‘Fashion Police’ star passed away in September 2014, aged 81.
But re-telling one of her mother’s jokes recently, daughter Melissa Rivers is keeping the family tradition very much alive.
She recounted: “When I told her that in my college textbook she was referred to as a feminist icon, she said: ‘Don’t be silly, Melissa. Feminists are just lesbians who can’t play golf!’
“I said, ‘Is Gloria Steinem a lesbian?’ She said, ‘I don’t know, I’ve never slept with her. But I do know she hasn’t broken par since 1987′.”
Melissa Rivers recalled the joke in her memoir The Book of Joan, shared in the Evening Standard today.
It’s far from Rivers’ only gay joke – having amassed a large gay following that she spent most of her life affectionately mocking.
When asked whether the US would see a gay president a few weeks prior to her death, she joked: “We already have it with Obama, so let’s just calm down.
“You know Michelle is a tr***y. A transgender, we all know.”
The joke evidently didn’t upset President Barack Obama – Melissa Rivers later revealed she had received a handwritten condolence letter from the politician.
The note said in part: “Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.”
