Homophobic leaflets handed out before Pride event
Leaflets which urge householders not to support a LGBT Pride event have been distributed just days before the celebrations are set to take place.
The homophobic leaflet – which was delivered through the letterboxes of hundreds of homes – urges residents to stay away from the Margate Pride Parade.
In an inspired play on words, the leaflet also promises that “Margate will never be MarGAYte”.
It also seemingly links homosexuality with paedophilia – issuing a call for residents to “save yourself and your children”.
The highly offensive note has been derided by many in the local community.
Volunteer pride co-ordinator Tony Butcher told KentOnline.co.uk, “This is a horrendous act and these people are inciting a riot.
“The comments are absurd, we are people who like other people of the same sex and to suggest we are paedophiles is absolutely ridiculous.”
However, this isn’t the first time anti-gay campaigners have taken to handing out hateful leaflets.
In the run up to the election, the ‘Coalition for Marriage’ distributed leaflets across Brighton – ‘warning’ people that Green MP Caroline Lucas supported equal marriage.
However, the group made little headway in Brighton Pavilion – the constituency thought to have one of the highest concentrations of LGBT voters in the country – as Ms Lucas was swiftly re-elected.
And earlier this month, the Ku Klux Klan also used leaflets as their weapons of choice – as leaders from the Louisiana chapter of the group distributed fliers urging people to join their group and slaughter gay people in an effort to “save our land, join the Klan, white power.”
“Stop Aids: Support Gay Bashing,” one of the flyers read. “Homosexual men and their sexual acts are disgusting and inhuman.”
