Anti-gay clerk gets a Cell Block Tango send up you have to hear
A mother has recorded a tribute to Kentucky clerk Kim Davis – after she was jailed for contempt of court after trying to block same-sex marriages.
Davis, the clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, made international news when she defied a string of court orders by refusing to grant marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, despite issuing marriage licenses being a large part of her job.
The clerk – whose lawyer Mat Staver was condemned by the Anti-Defamation League for comparing her to Jews sent to the gas chamber – has rejected several deals that would see her freed, and currently remains jailed for contempt.
As she sits behind bars, one mother took to the piano to record a special tribute to Davis – covering ‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago.
Citing Republican Presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee as “bigots”, political satirist ‘PsychoSuperMom’ added: “And now there’s this Kentucky nitwit…”
She jokes: “She had it coming, she had it coming, in jail is where she’s got to stay… the law she tested, and got arrested, discrimination is not okay.”
Riffing on the original number, the song continues: “You know how some bigots have these annoying habits that get you down? Like the county clerk who likes to read her Bible – no, not read, THUMP.
“She was always thumping her Bible. Especially when she didn’t want to give gay couples a marriage license.
“The county said she had to, she thumped. The state told her to, she thumped. The Supreme Court said she had to! She thumped. She thumped all the way to contempt of court.”
Velma Kelly would be proud.
