These gay police officers are the first in Spain to be lawfully wed!
Spain is celebrating as its first ever gay police couple have married.
While the country was one of the first to legalise equal marriage, this week marked the first time two same-sex officers within the country’s national police force, were married.
The Local reports that Chema and Jonathan, who married on Saturday, met whilst serving in the Policia Nacional.
Together for five years, the couple married in full dress uniform in the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera.
“We are not the first gays in the police, we have lots of gay friends in the force,” the couple told Canal Sur Radio.
“If it helps someone who is being bullied in school for their sexual orientation to see it as something normal, then that’s great. It’s not something that should be hidden just because you belong to a particular institution,” he continued.
The couple were celebrated on Twitter by many, and jetted off to the US for their honeymoon.
