This Fox News host caused a stir with his comments against Kim Davis
A Fox News host who called out Christians supporting Kim Davis on their hypocrisy has seen a backlash.
Davis was released from jail earlier this week after spending time behind bars for contempt of court.
The clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, made international news when she defied a string of court orders by refusing to grant marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, despite issuing marriage licenses being a large part of her job.
Shepard Smith made comments during the broadcast on Tuesday of Davis’ release from jail.
“They set this up as a religious play again,” he said. “This is the same crowd that says, ‘We don’t want Sharia law, don’t let them tell us what to do, keep their religion out of our lives and out of our government.'”
He went on to say that the Supreme Court had already ruled on issues similar to same-sex marriage, mentioning interracial marriages.
“This is not unprecedented. They did it when they said black and white people couldn’t marry… haters are gonna hate.”
The Right Scoop referred to Smith as “a puke”, going on to say: “Christians simply want for the government to stay out of our Christian beliefs instead of imprisoning us when our beliefs go against the invented rights of a lawless Supreme Court. And then he calls us hypocrites for not wanting Muslim theocracy in our country, suggesting we want to push our Christian values on the government? Does he know anything about how this country was founded? Has he ever read the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence? What an idiot.”
Writing for GOPUSA, Cliff Kincaid added that Smith’s comments proved that “anti-Christian bias that has been rearing its ugly head [on Fox News]”.
After being released on Tuesday, Davis now plans to return to work this coming Monday.
She faces a challenge, however, if she wants to stop her deputies from issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples, as Brian Mason, one of the deputies, who have been ordered to issue marriage licences in Davis’ absence, said he would ignore her if she told him not to issue licences to gay couples.
Photos of her were posted surrounded by ‘fan mail’, and she released a statement saying: “I am deeply moved by all those who prayed for me. All I can say is that I am amazed and very grateful. I am enjoying spending time with my husband, my family, and my three dogs. I have also been spending time reading boxes of letters expressing support and prayers from people around the country.
“I haven’t even made a dent in the piles of letters,” she said.
“I love God, love people, and love my work. I hope we will continue to respect these values and that America remains a place where all three can live in harmony,” Davis continued.
