Watch: Hilarious Tide ad takes aim at anti-gay clerk Kim Davis
A new TV ad has been launched, taking aim at a Kentucky clerk who tried to block same-sex couples from marrying.
Rowan County clerk Kim Davis was briefly jailed for contempt of court after she ignored direct orders from a court, by continuing to refusing to let gay couples marry.
Davis has been married four times, but claims God doesn’t want gays to marry.
She has since become a darling of social conservatives and right-wingers – with Republican Presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee both scrambling to be seen at her side.
A new ad for stain remover Tide to Go takes aim at the row, however – focussing on a gay couple who are finally on their way to get married.
As the pair approach a church, they are spotted by a Bible-holding woman, who storms over.
She shouts: “How offensive! I won’t let you blemish the sanctity of marriage.”
The pair assume she is being homophobic, and begin to protest – but she instead produces a Tide stain remover and covers up a stain on one of the men’s suits.
She then adds: “There, flawless! Carry on boys.”
The TV spot was directed by Mark Nickelsburg, who wrote: “First a clerk in Kentucky, and now a church lady in Los Angeles!
“This same sex couple faces yet another obstacle on the way to marriage equality in this commercial I directed.
“Special kudos for terrific performances by Matt Marr, Karl Ramsey, and Lynne Marie Stewart.”
The company previously launched a pro-gay ad in Canada, but plans to air it in the US were dropped.
It was later the target of a petition, urging companies to broadcast pro-gay ads, rather than creating them as one-offs.
