Iconic TV show Hart to Hart to get gay makeover
The popular 1980s detective series Hart to Hart is to be reportedly remade by the NBC network, with a gay couple instead of the original’s husband and wife.
The new version will see attorney Jonathan Hart and his male partner – investigator Dan Hartman – juggle relationship drama with solving crimes, reports the BBC.
Stars of the original series Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers played Jonathan and Jennifer Hart in the ABC original – which ran from 1979 to 1984.
The couple were last seen together in 1996 TV movie Till Death Do Us Hart.
Christopher Fife – whose previous shows include hit US TV shows Revenge and Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice – is has been tipped to write the new show.
Fife previously worked as a writer on the sitcom Will and Grace – a show considered ground-breaking for its inclusion of gay characters.
A description of the new show says that the show will be “a modern and sexy retelling of the classic series”, about “attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity.”
The news comes after media charity GLAAD recently announced it will no longer publish an annual report monitoring the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT representation on TV.
Earlier this month, the charity published its ninth annual Network Responsibility Index, which identifies TV networks who have excelled at representing LGBT people, storylines and characters, as well as those who have failed to do so.
However, as the report enters its ninth year, nearly all US TV networks are ranked ‘adequate’ or above – with the FOX network becoming the first major broadcaster to be ranked ‘excellent’
The charity confirmed that its new report will also be the last.
