Shock poster campaign tells gays to ‘f*** raw – PrEP works’
Posters encouraging people to have sex without condoms have appeared in Melbourne.
The posters, which were put up in the city centre of Melbourne, suggested that now that PrEP is becoming more common, condoms are no longer necessary.
They read: “You can fuck raw. PrEP works – no more HIV”.
Not entirely as they seem, however, the posters were part of a campaign by the SEEITCLEARLY2020 campaign.
The campaign’s Instagram page reads: “See it clearly. See HIV prevention clearly. See bareback sex clearly. See PrEP clearly.”
They were spotted outside the Randy Dragon Bar in Flinders Lane between Queen and Elizabeth Streets.
More posters were spotter later on Friday.
In a statement released by SEEITCLEARLY2020 the group said: “Our current poster campaign is designed to shock, it is designed to start a conversation and it has been implemented across Melbourne because of the lack of education and the lack of awareness by existing public health authorities. So we are taking it into our own hands, and we are talking about bareback sex when no other group will.”
PrEP is not yet available in Australia, and is currently undergoing clinical trials in Europe.
Organisations advocating for PrEP to become available have said they are not sure the way the message is carried on these posters is appropriate, but that it shows the great deal of interest in PrEP from the gay community.
