‘Once Upon A Time’ will explore LGBT relationship
An LGBT relationship is coming to ABC drama Once Upon a Time.
Executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed the information after a screening of the season premiere on Friday.
“We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that,” Kitsis told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s something we want to do this year,” Horowitz added.
“It’s something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.”
Viewers speculate that the relationship could occur between Mulan and Aurora, but Kitsis and Horowitz did not reveal which characters the arc would feature.
For her part, Mulan is slated to appear in multiple episodes that, as Horowitz revealed on Twitter, span both the first and second halves of the season.
Regardless of who the couple is, this will be the first LGBT relationship explored on the series.
The news comes after media charity GLAAD recently announced it will no longer publish an annual report monitoring the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT representation on TV.
Earlier this month, the charity published its ninth annual Network Responsibility Index, which identifies TV networks who have excelled at representing LGBT people, storylines and characters, as well as those who have failed to do so.
However, as the report enters its ninth year, nearly all US TV networks are ranked ‘adequate’ or above – with the FOX network becoming the first major broadcaster to be ranked ‘excellent’
The charity confirmed that its new report will also be the last.
Last week, it was also announced that classic 80s crime drama Hart to Hart will be receiving a gay makeover – with a gay couple in the lead roles.
