Doctor told Sue Perkins: It’s ‘easier’ to accept being infertile because you’re gay
Great British Bake Off host Sue Perkins has revealed that a doctor once told her she could more “easily” accept being infertile because she is a lesbian.
Perkins earlier this month revealed that living with a brain tumour for eight years has stopped her having children.
She said the growth, on her pituitary gland, was found during tests which she underwent as part of Supersizers, also on the BBC.
In an extract from her memoir ‘Spectacles’, published in the Sunday Times, Perkins said it “felt like a bereavement” when she found out.
She revealed that she was asked by a brain tumour consultant whether she had a boyfriend or husband, but she told him she is a lesbian.
He replied: “Oh, OK. Well, that makes it easier. You’re infertile. You can’t have kids.”
Perkins wrote: “Does not a lesbian have a fallopian tube? Am I not human, and [am] I not somebody who could be a lovely, wonderful mother?”
She also said she made a complaint about the doctor in question.
The Bake Off star and fellow presenter Anna Richardson earlier this year revealed that they are in a relaitonship together.
Perkins last week said she “went rogue”, attacking the culture secretary John Whittingdale over possible BBC funding cuts.
