Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor dedicates Emmy victory to trans community
Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor has dedicated the show’s victory at the Emmys to trans people around the world.
The renowned actor appears as trans woman Maura Pfefferman in the Amazon series, which focusses on a parent coming out to their children later in life.
The comedy-drama series aired its first season last year to rave reviews, and was nominated for a record 11 Emmy awards this year – unprecedented for an Amazon show.
Tambor picked up one of the show’s five Emmys, for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
The Arrested Development star said: “I had a teacher who used to say, ‘When you act, you have to act as if your life depends on it.’
“Now I’ve been given the opportunity to act because people’s lives depend on it.”
He added: “I’d like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community.
“Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your stories. Thank you for your inspiration. Thank you for letting us be part of the change.”
The show’s creator Jill Soloway, who has spoken about her own transgender parent, also delivered a moving speech about the trans movement after picking up a gong for outstanding directing for a comedy series.
Urging people to support trans equality legislation during her speech, she said: “Something interesting about my moppa Carrie. She could tomorrow go and try and find an apartment, and in 32 states it would be legal for the landlord to look her in the eye and say ‘we don’t rent to trans people.
“We don’t have a trans tipping point yet, we have a trans civil rights problem.”
The show also picked up nods for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series (Bradley Whitford), and Outstanding Costumes For A Contemporary Series, Limited Series or Movie.
