Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who continues to block gay couples from marrying, claims she is not homophobic ā€“ but doesnā€™t think gay people deserve to be treated with dignity.

Rowan County clerk Kim Davis was briefly jailed for contempt of court after she ignored direct orders from a court, by continuing to refusing to let gay couples marry.

She has since become a darling of radical right-wingers ā€“ with Republican Presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee both scrambling to be seen at her side.

Davis has been married four times, but claims God doesnā€™t want gays to marry.

However, in an interview with ABC, Davis seemed to believe that she was the victim ā€“ and not the innocent gay couples she had discriminated against.

The four-times-married, three-times divorced clerk told ABC: ā€œI have friends who are gay and lesbian, but I canā€™t put my name on a license that doesnā€™t reflect what God ordained marriage to be.ā€

However, when put to her that same-sex couples feel like getting married is a fundamental part of being treated with dignity, Davis insisted that they donā€™t have a constitutional right to dignity.

She said: ā€œI donā€™t think dignity is guaranteed in the Constitution. I think dignity is something that you find within yourself.

ā€œI feel really sad (that) someone could be so unhappy with themselves as a person that they did not feel dignified as a human being until they got a piece of paper.

ā€œI mean, thereā€™s just so much more to life than that.ā€

Davis is building up quite a collection of pieces of paper ā€“ it must be hard storing four marriage certificates and three divorce certificatesā€¦

Crying, she sobbed: ā€œWhat people say about me doesnā€™t define who I am. Thatā€™s everybodyā€™s opinion, thatā€™s everybodyā€™s rightā€¦

ā€œIā€™ve been called Hitler, Iā€™ve been called a hypocrite, Iā€™ve been called a homophobeā€¦ Iā€™ve been called things and names that I didnā€™t even know.

ā€œThose names donā€™t hurt me. What probably hurt me the worst is when someone tells me that my God does not love me or that my God is not happy with me, that I am a hypocrite of a Christian.ā€

Despite claiming she is just a persecuted Christian, Davis is represented by extremist lawyer Mat Staver ā€“ who is affiliated with a number of listed anti-LGBT hate groups.

Staver was condemned by the Jewish Anti-Defamation League earlier this month for comparing his client to Jews in the gas chamber.
