ā€œThis afternoon I was at my waitressing job on a beautiful early fall afternoon.

ā€œTwo parents and their young daughter came in,ā€ she wrote.

ā€œAs I was filling the water station, the dad came up to me and said: ā€˜My daughter just asked if you were a boy or a girl. I didnā€™t want to speak for you so would you like to talk to her?’ā€

Ms Hnilicka said she ā€œnervouslyā€ agreed, approaching the familyā€™s table.

ā€œI heard you asked if I was a boy or girl,ā€ she said to the young girl.

ā€œI think the important thing to remember is that everyone can be anything they want to be in this world.

ā€œItā€™s also important to try to be the best selves we can be for our family and friends, and even to strangers,ā€ she added.

ā€œSo to answer your question, I was told that I was a boy when I was little and now I live my adult life as a girl.ā€

She went on to tell the child: ā€œIt sounds complicated but itā€™s actually pretty simple,ā€ asking her: ā€œDo you have any questions for me?ā€, to which the child happily replied: ā€œNope!ā€

Ms Hnilicka said that she ā€œwalked away feeling really good about parents intentionally engaging their children about possibly difficult topics.ā€

ā€œGiving people the power to voice their truths in this complicated world is beautiful and healing.ā€

ā€œWay to go, mom and dads out there making space for transgender/gender non-conforming people like me.ā€

Her heartwarming story was shared on Facebook earlier this month, and has already earned nearly 6,000 likes.
