Alan Cumming to star in comedy series about gay restaurateur
Cabaret’s Alan Cumming has landed a role in a new Showtime comedy series about a New York restaurant owner.
The Good Wife actor, who is bisexual and married to long-term partner Grant Shaffer, will star as the lead lead in the series, Florent.
The show focusses on the real life of prominent New York restaurant owner and AIDS activist Florent Morellet, during his time running well-known cafe The Florent in the city’s meatpacking district.
According to Deadline, the series will explore the “light and dark” of the New York community, as the area becomes a destination for “everyone from NY’s literati to the neighborhood hookers and hustlers, the NYPD, and the burgeoning LGBT community”.
The real Morellet will advise Cumming on the role, which is written by Mad Men’s Patricia Resnick and directed by The Good Wife‘s Rosemary Rodriguez.
Showtime has put the show in production, though it is unclear when it will go to air given Cumming’s ongoing commitment to The Good Wife, which has been renewed for its seventh season.
He remains contracted to CBS series The Good Wife on a year-to-year basis, however – meaning that unless he is let go or the show is axed, Florent may not see the light of day for some time.
Earlier this year, Cumming bowed out of the Broadway production of Cabaret for the final time – having reprised the role he first played back in 1993.
