Sandi Toksvig launches comedy tour to raise funds for new political party
Comedian Sandi Toksvig is going on a ‘Politically Correct’ tour in order to raise funds for the Women’s Equality party, which she helped to found earlier this year.
The out comedian announced earlier this year that she planned to quit her role on Radio 4′s The News Quiz after nine years in order to focus on launching the Women’s Equality Party.
Toksvig has now announced that she will embark on a new comedy tour in order to raise funds for the party, with “all profits from the shows will go to fund the Party’s work”.
A release explained of the events: “Sandi will entertain audiences solo for the first half of the evening, and in the second she will introduce them to some special guests and the compelling ideas behind this exciting new venture.”
The comedian said: “When we launched the Women’s Equality Party earlier this year, I said it was time to stop making jokes about politics and participate… On this tour I can do both!
“This is such an exciting and crucial time in the party’s development – our membership is growing so quickly and there is a real appetite for our core messages around gender equality.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out on the road and connecting with supporters round the country, whilst at the same time persuading others to join the Party.”
Dates have been confirmed in Birmingham, Belfast, Brighton, Salford, Cardiff and Leeds.
She explained of the political party previously: “I have made jokes over and over and over again about politics and, do you know, this election I’ve had enough… and I have decided that instead of making jokes about it, I need to participate.
“So I am involved in the founding of a new political party. It’s called the Women’s Equality Party. It is a fantastic group of women – and indeed men – who have decided that enough is enough and we need to make some changes.
“Clearly, if I’m going to be taking part in the political scene, it wouldn’t be appropriate sitting there making jokes about it.”
