Hillary Clinton campaign appoints LGBT liasion for White House bid
Hillary Clinton has appointed a staffer to serve as her LGBT liasion for her Presidential bid.
The former Secretary of State is currently vying with Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party’s Presidential nomination ahead of the 2016 vote.
However, despite an early lead with the LGBT community, Clinton has slipped in recent polls as Sanders eats into her voter base.
Recent polling from gay hook-up app Grindr showed that Clinton is now users’ second choice for President behind Sanders, despite previously being named ‘Ally of the Year’.
The politician this week appointed staffer Dominic Lowell to serve as her director of LGBT outreach.
The Washington Blade reports that Lowell previously served as director of strategic partnerships for youth engagement campaign Rock the Vote, where he helped to coordinate outreach to progressives.
He is the latest out staffer to join the Clinton campaign, alongside Campaign Manager Robby Mook, Deputy Political Director Brynne Craig and National Finance Director Dennis Cheng.
Former Human Rights Campaign exec Elizabeth Birch praised the decision, saying: “More than ever before, the LGBT vote is a potent one — not just in terms of that critical edge that is required in close elections, but because LGBT people are now a mature and experienced organizing force.
“This is a critical position for the Hillary Clinton campaign and they have filled it with a proven, dynamic talent in Dominic.”
Clinton was recently challenged with comments she made in 2004 opposing same-sex marriage.
She explained: “What I’ve always tried to do is say, what is the best decision I can think about making now?
“On same-sex marriage, like a lot of people, including our President, I did evolve.
“I was not raised to even imagine this, and I’m thrilled now that it is the law of the land – I have a lot of good friends who are now able to be married because of the changes we’ve made legally and constitutionally.”
The former First Lady announced her support for equal marriage back in 2013 – and has consistently shown her support for LGBT issues since.
